FreezeThe Release Manager for Woody, Anthony “aj” Towns, posted this message to debian-devel-announce to explain the new security update build system, and the progress of it’s implementation, for anybody interested. For those who have had their head in a bucket for the past 3 months, this system, or rather, the lack of it, has been the major holdup in the Woody release process. The majority of hard work has been done (thanks to the hard work of the oft-maligned FTP masters), and now it needs to be fully implemented and tested, then maybe we can get on with that release thing.

    Thanks AJ!

I read also some interesting bits about “Testing”:

” Its changelog needs to point it at “stable-security” or
“testing-security” in place of the usual “unstable”. “

” It’s possible that some of these changes will let us handle security
updates in better ways in future (I’m hopeful it’ll let us does security
updates for testing in a more timely manner, eg) “

Would this mean we will get Security Fixes for “Testing” to somewhere in the future?
Wow, that *really* would make my day.

Thinking more about this, you could now have a seperate or enlarged security team to cover testing too, or just have someone to OK uploads from security-savvy maintainers to testing-proposed-updates (which will also be autobuilt on testing). Either way it’s certainly great for the people who like to be on the cutting edge (but not bleeding =).
