Debian 2.2r3 & Unofficial Woody and Sid CD Images
Submitted by Netsnipe on Tuesday, May 01, 2001 – 10:38
I’ve done some digging around and the unofficial CD ISO images for Woody and Testing are being mirrored by serveral Debian mirrors around the world. Attila Nagy provides more details about his ISOs in this post on the debian-devel mailing list. Note that if you’ve been waiting for the release of the official 2.2r3 ISO images, the 3-CD images should be readily available from most official Debian CD mirrors listed here. Read more for the full mirror list of debian-unofficial images.

Subject: what about XFS and Reiser support
    Author: Anonymous

Do these Woody/Sid bootable test CD’s support XFS and Reiser?

I can’t use zoltar’s XFS boot floppy, as there wasn’t enough room for both UDMA66 and XFS.

I have a workaround since I can create an extra ext2 partition, and move everything over later to XFS. That, and move my drive back to UDMA33 for now.

The pool directory is the new package repository for unstable and testing (sid and woody, respectively). The only time you’ll need to worry about it is when you’re following unstable, and something in it breaks and you want to get an older version of that package.

I was checking out the sid directory on those mirrors. There are 7 .raw files there. How would I get those burned to a cd-r and which files do I need to get a working install going? It’s kinda confusing…

OK, I am a new debian convert, I understand the difference between debian and potato, but not between SID, Testing, Unstable and woody. WTF!!

there are currently three different distributions of Debian.
The official release is the stable one, then we have a testing and an unstable one. Unstable is the bleedinge edge, regularly honours its name in unstability, etc.
Testing is the set of more stable packages from unstable. These form the final test-bed for the next stable release.
Debian releases are nicknamed after characters from Toy Story; therefor the currently stable release is aka Potato (but it should actualy be The Klecker release, after the late debian-developer Joey ‘Espy’ Klecker), testing is currently aka Woody, and hence the future stable release will be known under that name, unstable is aka Sid.

Debian is the name for the distribution.
Potato (stable), woody(testing), sid(unstable) are specific releases of debian. (OK, only potato has been released, the others are for the future).

Stable is the officially released distribution. It has been quite thoroughly tested, is supported,… For the moment it’s potato.

Unstable is the developpement distribution. It’s where all the developpement takes place. It’s likely to be broken sometimes as developpers try things, or try to upgrade packages with broken ones,… For the moment it’s sid.

Testing is in between. It’s based on stable, but package are upgraded when they meet some quality related criteria (no critical bugs,…) So you have some features from unstable without the risk of having a broken system. (the management of testing is completely automatic : the system decides if a package from unstable can go to testing or not). It’s woody right now.

Sometimes the testing distribution goes thru a freezing/testing process, and is granted stable status when all the bugs are gone and the system is believed sufficiently stable to be called stable 🙂
When that happens, potato will disappear, woody will become stable, and I don’t know what will happen to sid. I personnaly think that sid should stay unstable, and a new testing should be “germinated” from stable.

The code name “Potato” (for Stable) will disappear once the current “Woody” (now Testing) becomes the new Stable, and “Sarge” will become the new Testing codename.

Potato will join the ranks of Bo, Hamm and Slink as Prior versions.

As for Sid (Unstable), the Debian people have decided that Sid will be the permanent code name for the Unstable branch. I got that from one of the Debian people who led a BOF session at the recent Colorado Linux Info Quest (CLIQ) meeting held at the end of this past March.
