Debian on IBM xSeries 330 and HP LP1000R servers
Submitted by infernix on Friday, September 28, 2001 – 18:37
In the near future we are going to buy either IBM xSeries 330 or HP LP1000R servers. We are going to run both W2K and Debian on them. These servers are going to be loaded with RAM (2GB and 4GB), they will have two CPUs (P3) and will be connected to storage appliances through FCAL. I have searched the web on compatibility or reliability issues, but there’s a lot of HP and IBM propaganda to dig through. Can someone make some recommendations on these machines? Does anyone have real-world experience with either of these beasts?

alp: It’s worth noting that while both IBM and HP have pledged support for Linux, the latter has chosen Debian as the basis for its future research and development projects.

Just got our x300 in last night. Its basically the same as a x330, but lower on the horsepower end of things. Preliminary results: works perfect. Eepro100 and an aic7xxx runnin software raid1 had me apt-gettin to my hearts content.

While HP has done the right thing to GNU/Linux by choosing Debian, it has commited to dumping its PA-RISC and Alpha superior technologies in favor of the inferior, unproven — and probably worthless, incapable of showing results — IPF (alias IA64, alias Merced.

Choosing IBM gives you peace of heart, because IBM isn’t going to dump PowerPC in favor of Intel crap.

Well, at least my company (a small hosting & software company) has used several IBM x330’s, and they work great with Debian potato and woody. But of course when you’re running a company it’s more about the price. Also, in my previous job we used HP’s (not that one you mentioned – they were older models) and they had all kinds of small hardware problems, the IBM ones haven’t caused any kind of trouble. Debian installed fine and all the hardware was supported, tho.

We had some difficulties with the HP’s and Potato 2.2r3 because the kernel (2.2.18pre21) didn’t get the RAID-Controller right. we had to boot an earlier revision (2.2r0) with an older kernel to install Debain on them. After some BIOS Update on the HP and the Controller (NetRaid 1M, some AMI MegaRaid based thing) they worked fine and are now running on kernel 2.2.19 without any problems.

We also use some IBM x340 with IBM’s ServeRAID Controller (IPS) without any problem. They were running 221 days before i downed them to install a newer kernel.
