    You should really read the discussion about this on debian-policy – I think it was in June. The points you made were addressed before the changes were made: tasks are centrally maintained using a override file of some sort. Thus package maintainers don’t have to insert Task headers into their packages, and task descriptions are distributed along tasksel. And about command-line support: I believe it would be easy enough to add it to tasksel.

    BTW, the old task packages were abused to the point of being useless for their original purpose.

    /usr/doc/tasksel/README states:

    On startup, the tasksel program will read

    Next it will read

    /var/lib/dpkg/available. Task: fields in that

    On my freshly installed woody system /usr/share/tasksel/debian-tasks.desc has Task: data, but /var/lib/dpkg/available doesn’t. Where is your perl script find what packages are in each task?
