I have to second that. Newbie Users need more direction on what software to install.

You may ask why make it easy — the dist isn’t aimed at newbies. Two reasons:

    1. Most important, it will cut down on support requests and bug reports due to people installing everything or nothing and not knowing what to do from there. Give newbies a basic system they can use. Make a couple different basic installs.

    2. We can stop hearing about how “unfriendly” Debian is. I don’t know about you, but I’m tried of rehashing this thread every other month. Lets resolve and get past this annoying issue so we can concentrate on what’s important and on making this dist even better.

a newbified install option, where packages are selected in groups based on description, rather than proper names.

Isn’t that what the “Simple” install option already does, by using tasksel to provide a list of tasks to install? Maybe more tasks need to be created, but the mechanism is (for the most part) already there. IMO part of the problem is too many newbies don’t know they are, and won’t select the “I am a newbie, I don’t know what I’m doing, please help me!” mode of installation, unless it’s more or less shoved down their throats – then they end up somewhere that they don’t understand, saying “it’s too hard, I need help!”, but if they’d just selected the “I’m a newbie” mode to begin with, they’d have less problems…
