Frequency of Updates Posted on Friday, November 09 @ 06:22:24 GMT
Some of you have noticed (and made noise about the fact) that we don't update quite as often as slashdot. This is for a variety of reasons, please read the story below.
At the moment, we're all really busy. I'm in the middle of exams, and I believe some others are too. That means that few admin-specific stories are being written.
Secondly, we don't get that many submissions. There aren't as many opportunities for Debian-specific stories as, say, Linux-specific, or IT-specific, stories. There simply isn't the volume.
Thirdly, submissions take a lot of time. Believe it or not, one in every 3 submissions gets completely rewritten from scratch. Some include only a URL, some include 16 pages of information (no, I'm not kidding, I got one today), that you need to extract the good stuff from. Some are completely irrelevant and never see the "Post Story" button.
Lastly, if we have spare time, we try to spend it on DPv2, our much-awaited new backend. We were prepared to move before our server decided it needed to fry :
So, how can you help? Submit stories, and preferably good ones. Take what's on our front page as a style guide, try to base your stories on the same style. That means we don't have to rewrite them, only add notes if necessary. Secondly, write them if they don't exist! If you have been missing a HOWTO, or have something you quickly hacked up that should see the light of day, please send it to either daniel [at] sfarc [fullstop] net or robster [at] debianplanet [fullstop] org.
