    I make it sound like my system is horribly unstable,

    it isn’t, I’ve had X freeze on two occations with debian woody, both times the glxgears OpenGL demo was running, I’ve yet to figure it out, nothing in the XFree86 logs, no core dumps, no nothing. I would

    guess it’s somewhat related to the NVIDIA drivers.

    Oh well.

    Doesn’t hdparm test the hard drive itself and not the filesystem on it? There is something else that is slowing you down. I was reading below and someone mentioned the 5 sec write that ext3 does. Test your drive unmounted, it should be the same.
