KDE 3.0 Alpha and KDE 2.2 on Debian Unstable
Contributed by orthwein on Sunday, December 09 @ 03:14:59 GMT

    KDE
If anyone is interested in getting the KDE 3.0 Alpha going without losing their KDE 2.2, I had a relatively painless time. I use the KDM login manager, but it should be fairly simple with any login manager.

DanielS: Ivan E. Moore II (the maintainer of kdebase and kdelibs) has packages of kde3 alpha1 available here. I don't intend to make updated packages for kde{admin, graphics, network, pim, ssh, utils} available until I'm completely satisfied with the 2.2 packages; getting them perfectly in woody is the main priority.

    Just follow the steps at:

    http://women.kde.org/projects/coding/kde2+3.html

Then before restarting KDE, edit the /etc/kde2/kdm/kdmrc, and add the SessionType kde3 to SessionTypes for both [KDM] and [X-*-Greeter]

    i.e. SessionTypes=default,sawfish,twm,gnome-session,kde2,failsafe,kde3

Finally add a symbolic link in /usr/bin to point to the kde3

    #cd /usr/bin
    #ln -s /usr/local/kde3/bin/startkde kde3

I'm not certain if this was the best way to do this, but it works, and I'm now happily and safely testing KDE 3.

Sorry, I thought that was working fine, could have sworn I tested it. Anyway, visit http://women.kde.org/projects/coding/kde2+3.html to check out the instructions. That link should work fine.

Thanks for having your priorities straight!

Hmm, the KDE3 packages seem to have vanished from Ivan's site. Anyone know what's up?
