You can only say that compiling from source is more trusted than running a packaged binary if you trace through every line of the source to make sure you know what it does.

Don’t know what would happen if you put together a distribution where half of the packages are compiled for 386 and the other half for 686.

But it would make sense for gnome, gimp, tuxracer and other hardware-hungry packages!

If there would be no RMS, there would be no Debian. Attacking the man personally instead of his ideals is low. You don’t have to agree with him, but remember that your “decent linux box” runs nicely because of his ideals.

An yes, I do think that medicines should be free. Todays there are millions of people dying in Afrika, because there are *patents* on the pills that can relieve their pain. Non-free pill are only reserved to wealthy Europeans and USA-citizens (and not every European or USA-citizen is wealthy) who need to sell a long to by the damn pills.

    Who’s closing his eyes?

    +customizing/tailoring

How many packages really need your personal touch, and more specifically, how many can’t be changed through a config file? There’s only so many ways to compile tar.

    +runtime performance

How is saving me 2/10ths of a second really better performance when I have to waste 20 minutes to compile the package?

+portability (gentoo was ported to ppc and sparc in very short time)

This really is irrelevant as it doesn’t matter whether I compile it or a package maintainer compiles it. I suspect this “short time” you speak of was helped because many others have already done the ground work in updating the source packages to compile on other platforms.

+bleeding edge packages available within a day as it is pretty easy to write ebuild scripts

I can do this with debian source packages, without recompiling every bloody package on the machine. But that’s not what I want. I prefer packages that have been put together by someone who has experience with the package, the time to test it and the ability to debug the issues that always come up.

+theoretically full trust in your binaries as you compiled them by yourself (and you always got the sources of your binaries)

If knowing that you compiled your own binaries gives you a warm fuzzy, go ahead. Just don’t expect to come be my security consultant.

+ you got kde3 and xfree4.2 running just smoothly

same thing about bleeding edge packages above.

    a) it was compiled for i686 by default (c’mon, that’s reasonable). those wanting debian on 386 can use potato. cool down: most new software (see gnome, kde) will not run fast enough on a 386 box anyway, thus why still supporting it. buy yourself a duron for a few hundred bucks and i promise you that you will be happy with it (it’s definitely worth the money)

I686 is not a good choice. Yeah, you might have a fast pentium 3, but a lot of people are still using older hardware. I have a k6-2 500 right now. Yes, people still use socket 7 hardware…500Mhz is fast enough for everything I do (except for watching *DivX movies…I usually skip 60 or 70 frames per minute according to XINE…this is noticeable when there is a lot of motion [because of the k6-2s bad FPU]…maybe GCC 3.1 and -fmmx -fdnow -march=k6-2 will help…). I can edit audio, browse the web, listen to music, everything most people need to do. And I don’t want to be stuck using an extremely out of date version of Debian just because you have an i686 machine…anything above 100Mhz is not obsolete as a desktop machine yet (I know a guy at the local LUG that runs KDE 3 on a 90Mhz DEC Alpha with no problems!). However, I do think that someone should set up a mirror that build optimized builds of Debian (e.g. i586, i686, p4, k6, PPCw/altivec). In fact, the Mentalinux project will be doing that once we find a build server…mentalunix.sf.net (not typo…the site is horribly out of date because we just started development again [also the 0.0.1 installer disc has a b0rked python-gnome so wait until I upload 0.0.2 tommorow or monday if you’d like to mentalinux]).

Ridiculous GNU touch? LOL. You’re precious Gentoo wouldn’t compile shit from scratch if it wasn’t the tools made by those ppl you scron so much. Gentoo and BSD users (al least those of this ilk, there are nice ones) apparently have more in common that some overrated ports system: they are both ungrateful, sold out, l33t little weenies that have no interest in anything that goes beyind their punny little minds.
