ya even debian people are like “oh yes progeny is so easy to install it’s great for the end users” but then you say well ok how about making a better installer for debian and you get “text installers forever! allah be praised!!”.

knoppix and progeny’s installers are only for i386. Debian’s installer works for I think 11 architectures.

Now don’t think graphical is easier. Yes debian’s installer could be easier, and some work on a completely new and modular installer is in progress for next release. But going graphical is not a guarantee for easy installations. (It’s a guarantee for hardware problems though 🙂

An attempt was made to change the installer for woody (debian-installer), but progress was too slow to incorporate it in this cycle (this was one of the holdups for woody’s release, actually)

PGI and the Progeny stuff that supports it were only recently integrated into Debian and aren’t really ready (or tested well enough) to be an official installer. I wouldn’t be surprised if PGI is offered in woody+1 (at least as an option) on architectures where it works.
