"14. What is the benefit over the standard Debian distribution?

Step by step guided installation. Preselected and configured applications and window managers. Based on more recent software than Debian's standard release. Includes KDE. Includes Office suites. Installing a standard Debian system is no easy task. Standard Debian is a very large distribution and requires lots of time to understand and install. We build from recent sources including the latest Debian 2.2 potato and some packages from Debian woody. "

In other words, it's probably not of much interest to anyone who reads Debian Planet already. 🙂

Seriously though, I question the utility of basing a commercial effort on bridging the gap between where Debian is and where it's already going. There are efforts underway to address all of the points Libranet claims to take care of (installation, ease of use, latest software), and anything integrated into the Debian project itself will naturally work better in the long run (better supported, etc).

I'm not saying all these commercial efforts aren't any good, just that they need to provide some _service_ other then gloss. Progeny seems to be focusing on providing orginizations with a managable solution. They're not just lumping managability on top of Debian and selling CDs.

Actually, I hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see a more groups profit from free software. We'll see.

I am using 1.9.0 right now and am quite happy.

I think that they did a good job of packaging a LOT of useful software as opposed to "shovelware" (ie thousands of packages you don't use or need), and focus on getting a working system use can use "out of the box."

I was completely new to Debian, and wanted to try not only it, but get the newest kernel and XFree86 etc. They supply both KDE 2.1 and ximian gnome.

The 1.9.1 upgrade is out & about. Kernel 2.4.3, Xfree86 4.0.2, ReiserFS (still), KDE 2.1.1. Improved adminmenu/xadminmenu package, too.
