How to get the Euro into Debian?
Contributed by Anonymous on Thursday, January 03 @ 08:46:38 GMT

    Ask Debianplanet
Several European countries have replaced their old currencies with the euro. For those who live in these countries, or anyone else for that matter, euro support is a necessity; see the Debian Euro HOWTO.

Hint: there's a nifty little euro-support package in woody.

I saw on Debianworld.org that a document is available on this adress :

    http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-euro-support/

It's a document provided by Javier Fernandez-Sanguino Pena

In woody/testing there is a 'euro-support' package with documentation and a simple 'euro-test' script. I solved most of the euro problems by setting fonts charset from 8859-1 to 8859-15.

Here are a few handy tips from IRC:

    * Tv has euro in AltGr-e
Tv: The French keymap I use doesn't have it.
Tv: There's another French keymap, but that one doesn't provide Meta, Compose or Menu, so it's a no-no.
Lo-lan-do: i edited the keymap and s/EuroSign/currency/ and it works ...
buxy: I spent two hours trying to find out what file was to be edited. $verbose++?
Lo-lan-do: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb/symbols/fr but it's not a conf file, so you'll lose the change at the next upgrade
you can copy it to fr-euro and change XF86Config to point to fr-euro
    Doesn't seem to work...
AltGr+E does nothing, while AltGr+Shift+E does the cent sign.
    Lo-lan-do: xmodmap -e 'keysym e = e E EuroSign' worked for me
    Okay, locale problem, it seems.
    Lo-lan-do: Change to -15, not -1.
    Yep. Seems to work.

Pfft... when we had guilders, I couldn't find the guilders sign on my keyboard either, so I just typed "f 10,-", or "fl. 10,-" instead of this nice cursive F that is the guilder sign. I'll type "E 10,-" just the same.

Having your own currency sign on your keyboard is for weenies, Englishmen and Americans 😉

    Greets,

    Pflipp
