GnuCash with Euro conversion support on Debian
Contributed by Anonymous on Thursday, January 03 @ 08:48:02 GMT

    GNOME
GnuCash 1.6.5 includes a wizard for Euro conversion, but alas, the version in sid at the moment is 1.6.4. Debian users here in Euroland who rely on GnuCash to manage their daily cash drainage can therefore be in deep deep trouble with their newfound currency.

DanielS: Thanks to Sami Lempinen for this article. There will probably be a GnuCash upload very soon - I imagine someone will NMU if the maintainer doesn't upload.

While 1.6.5 is not available for Debian, it is, however, fairly easy to compile GnuCash from sources on an unstable system. Don't believe what the naysayers naysay about the difficulty of compiling GnuCash!

Due to a huge list of third party libraries required, I ended up having to apt-get a number of dev packages. When configure fails, determining the name of the package is fairly easy with apt-cache and the Debian package search on the Web. Towards the end of the compilation, I had to create a link from /usr/lib/libwrap.so to /usr/lib/libg-wrap-runtime-guile.so for the compilation to pull through. Also, I ran configure with

    ./configure --prefix=/opt/gnucash

in order to avoid overwriting the still-installed 1.6.4 Debian package.

A little bit of patience with the compilation provides you with an Euro-conversion-capable copy of GnuCash for the time being.

Isn't that what build-depends are for?
