Reasons for chosing debian over redhat ?
Contributed by bowa on Thursday, November 16 @ 20:06:42 GMT

    Ask Debianplanet
At school we will start getting classes of 'linux' this year, but our teacher is planning on teaching Redhat 6.2 (luckily he didnt choose 7). Can anyone point me to an article that will convice him chosing debian instead of rh ? Or can you give me some well motivated reasons ?

    ressu: good question.. anyone?

    Is it a good question?

Sounds more like someone who _thinks_ debian is better but when it comes down to it, can't think why or doesn't know Redhat enough to say.

Hmm...a good opportunity to leave behind religion and learn something.

Do the course with Redhat, and then tell us why Debian is least you'll be an educated advocate :o)

Consider what applications you have to run.

RedHats advantage is that there are some (commercial) applications which have only RedHat support, so if you want to have this support, RH is your natural choice.

Debians advantage is the very easy administration of the system. Your system admin will save himself a lot of time (after getting used to dselect/apt :).

This is my own experience. There is also a Debian-Advantages-HOWTO and you can find it

RH better for teaching (Score: 1)

    Of course it is!

Think of it, if the teacher decides to use Debian not much can go wrong, which means fewer learning opportunities.

Stress out your students, teacher! Force them to put that RH on!

Now seriously, I don't think it makes such a big difference what distribution you choose to teach Linux. It would if you were learning how to work with a mouse (a la M$ manuals), or what menu options to press to start a word processor or save a file, but my guess is you'll be using vim or emacs and the command line most of the time to do stuff that's more or less the same across distributions. There's a few differences in the location of system files and such, but rather than getting your teacher to use Debian instead of RH, you should ask to be told of those differences that do exist. Bottom line is you're learning Linux, not RH or Debian, and what you learn should be of use for all distributions.

I would suggest that the class do an install of
both, and cover the differences and similarities.

DEB and RPM are the two main flavours of Linux distribution so both should get a mention.
(and it would be instructive to compare Kpackage and dselect. They are both horrible but in different ways)

Although RPM distros just don't appeal to me, that's
mostly personal taste, and my reasons might not be yours. But your teacher should bear in mind that diversity is part of what free software is about.

Your teacher's decision probably isn't a condemnation of Debian or and endorsement of Redhat. Your teacher might just have more experiance with/familiarity with RedHat. Unless this is a really indepth sysadmin-level course, I don't think it really matters what distro you use. If this is just an intro to Unix/Linux, any distro will do.

Besides, if your mostly familiar with Debian, it'll be good for YOU if the teacher teaches RedHat. You'll have more opportunities to learn. You might find some things in the RedHat distro you like a lot. You might also get a better appreciation for things about Debian that you've previously just taken for granted/didn't even realize were abnormally cool?? 🙂

Martin Schulze once put together a listing of

    Debian advantages:

For schools, I think the 'open' aspect of Debian

is very important. You can read the development

mailing lists and understand why a specific design

decision was made. And you can actually get

involved in the development yourself (e.g. by

    fixing simple bugs).

First I am with Debian myself.

Second your teacher is right! He needs to give to a class the best knowledge of Linux as possible on the most standard _commercial_ distribution (RH IMHO). There are many advantages of his choice but I would highlight only 2:

    a) Everyone who wants will clearly see the advantages of Debian distribution.

    b) Most of your classmates probably would meet with RH or SuSe in their future.

So pass my regards to him.

    Pavel Epifanov.
