    Woody release delayed
Posted on Tuesday, April 30 @ 16:57:41 BST

The long awaited, much hailed, release 3.0 of Debian GNU/Linux will not be released on May 1st, although the content of the distribution is in a releaseable state. There is a lack of sufficient infrastructure for generating security updated for all eleven architectures. There are also some possible problems with CD images on Sparc and Alpha, however these on their own would not hold up the release. Woody will be released, if need be without the CD images for these platforms. A full version of the announcement by the release manager Anthony 'aj' Towns is available.

    From the article:

[0] Issuing an advisory and fixed .debs for the six architectures that

released with Debian 2.2 (potato) already takes, essentially, an

entire night with the current tools; doing likewise for the eleven

architectures that will release with woody will take more time than

the security team are able to commit; doing it with woody's eleven

architectures _and_ potato's six architectures for a few months

so that people have time to evaluate woody before being forced to

upgrade to it is completely out of the question.

I want a multi threaded debian release process!

Seriously, I mean this could easily have been prepared for while 3.0 RC bugs were being squashed. There were even ooooh nine or so months of imminent Debian 3.0 releases as warning for chrissakes.

This problem the best yet example of precisely what is wrong with the Debian release process and how it hasn't been addressed.

If someone had said "we WILL release on May 1st have your security setup preparations ready by March 1st for testing", doesn't anyone else think we might actually be ready for a release now?

This is the result of bad communication between developers.

On the other hand, I'm not bothered pesonally 😛 and AJ Towns did a great job quality wise.

welldone all (woody is ready afterall).

so what will this mean for those of us who want to throw a dist-upgrade right away?

will everything install and 'fall into place' eventually when the little problems are fixed? or will the security glitches render the system unfit?

So if i'd like to run woody now, I should dist-upgrade (from potato) to 'testing'? I guess when it's not officially released yet it's not moved over to 'stable' ????

You don't need a Woody release to run Woody.

You can upgrade Potato or install it from scratch.
