Debian pre installed on HP's Blades
Contributed by eckes on Wednesday, May 01 @ 17:42:38 BST

    Hewlett Packard
Talking with an HP Consultant, he told me something I did not know: The new HP Blade Servers (BC11100) ship with Debian as the default and pre-installed distribution. Searching the web, I found proof to support this claim.

This is pretty cool, since HP does not only use open standards for the Blade's architecture (Compact PCI which allows third party to deliver specialiced blade cards), but also a completely open Linux Distribution. According to HP, RedHat, Caldera, TurboLinux, Suse and Debian qualify for HP support services.

I am not sure if the upcoming PA-RISC Blades will support Linux too, but IMHO it does not make much sense to run HP-UX on Blades. Let's hope that the Merger will bring a cool styling to the cool hardware 🙂

    Why not HP-UX? (Score: 1)

Why would it make no sense to run HP-UX on PA-RISC Blades? HP-UX is far from dead, it's one of the leading systems for the ia64 architecture, if I'm to believe HP's propaganda...

Nice to see that HP's involvement with Debian is paying off (Bdale and others work for HP...)

If they don't run Debian, then I for one would be VERY suprised. Bdale has spent a lot of time on the PA-RISC port (as well as IA-64) making sure that Woody would be shippable for that architechure. And HP (through Bdale) has mentioned that they will support Debian on PA-RISC, so it'd be very strange for them to do a turn-around on this.

And if you're wondering how I got this info, I heard it from Bdale's mouth in one of his talks at the Debian mini-conference that was held in the 2 days just before LCA 2002. *grin*
