Contributed by nico on Wednesday, September 05 @ 08:49:21 BST

    X Window
    Visit http://xine.sourceforge.net
    and: http://dxr3.sourceforge.net

and enjoy playing DVD's on your TV (if you got a dxr3 mpeg2 decoder card), or on your screen.
    😉

DanielS: I wish I had a better machine so I could actually use Xine.. And, no, it's not in Debian yet.

    That's not right ! There are xine-0.5.2 packages in unstable , but they're called xine-ui and libxine0 ! So do a apt-get install xine-ui and enjoy !

it has been in unstable for some time, however the problem is that it does not include the plugin to view encrypted dvds. so, i still compile from source and add in the captain css plugin. works great.

0.5.x are a major release in xine development. It now support dxr3 cards (included in the code instead of patching). It also features a new GUI, and this is not included for a while in sid. Anyway, 0.5.2 is in sid now, and everybody can test it.

Apparently everyone is wrong about xine 5.2 being in sid. I've checked for a couple of days and still not updated. 4.3-2 is the most recent xine pkg. Maybe someone will finally add 5.2 🙂 But I'll just build it, so not really a bother. Xine 5.2 should be great. The 4.x series worked well, but I had a problem with certain movies, which they have apparently reworked in 5.2 (such as X-Men).

If you mean the xine package, you´re right - but the version 0.5.2 of "xine" is called xine-ui and libxine0 and is in sid since o few days .(but I don´t actually know since when !)

I hate to be picky but is this site for Debian news or just another general new site. This item would have been usefull if it had contained links to debs or a HOWTO for debian install. I visit daily to get the latest news and discussions. If I want all the latest software updates I look at freshmeat.

It is debian related, the tar.gz's contain debian dirs, so running dpkg-buildpackage, and you've got the latest release 🙂

Xine is painful... Try mplayer (Score: 0)

I have been really impressed with mplayer (http://mplayer.sourceforge.net/). Xine's interface is just so...clunky. mplayer's latest "release" is CLI, however the latest CVS includes a skinnable GUI. mplayer always seems to play my mpeg and avi files beautifully, regardless of the format, and it's very, very fast. It can use libavifile, but it also has options for playing divx natively, which is much faster. The keyboard controls are awesome as well. It's really worth a look..
