    Woody DVD-ISO images?
Contributed by d00d on Wednesday, October 17 @ 05:59:43 BST

    CD ISO Images
Will there be provided big DVD ISO images with the Woody release?
Since DVD recorders will propagate soon, I think i'd be a good idea.

To avoid wasting mirror space, I think you could set a poll to get some
info on how many people would grab or obtain grabbed DVD for Woody.

I would like to have DVD-Images of the Debian Distribution. So you have not to play DJ if you install the system... 🙂

Count my vote, too. I'd definitely rather buy on DVD than CD.

Good thing to sell these, but silly thing to mirro the image. Apt-get people, that's what debian's all about.

Most of us should be downloading an install floppy then getting internet up so we can apt-get the rest of the stuff we need.

apt-get ensures that the data is the most recent. It saves on long downloads (let's not overload the mirrors).

Also, few of us have dvd burners, now.

Finally, if we have the bandwidth to download a dvd, we have the bandwidth to apt-get stuff.

CD/DVD resellers need to download ISOs first. An interesting way would be providing DVD ISOs only to resellers, or providing a script that converts all the CD ISOs to a DVD one so that the same data can be recycled (while only matching md5sums are official).

    Apt-get people, that's what debian's all about.

I know it's a bit silly, but begginners are very used to have everything from CD/DVD, starting from windoze software and other GNU/Linux distributions. Debian is truly for the apt-get people, but before apt-get newcomers want to take a CD/DVD.

I don't, but the specs for the Pioneer DVD-A03 show that it uses the MMC-3 command set, as designed for CD-R. IOW, a DVD recorder will appear to Linux programs as a rather large CD recorder; I believe that cdrecord is already OK with DVDs.

Hell, I would buy one - I have a nasty dl cap on my connection soo it's cheaper for me to buy Debian cds than to download them.

A DVD Release would be cool, only one "cd" to bring along for system repairs, Instead of 3-4 (I believe that Woody will be around 3 - 4 CDs binaries only).

Think of it, binaries and source on one image.. would properly make someones lifes a lot easier.

But seriously, I haven't meet a single individuel who used their PC DVD drive for anything other than watching movies - kindda a shame, because it's a great media.

SuSE can come on DVD. I think you can get Mandrake on DVD, too. And a lot of computer games (like Baldur's Gate series) came out on DVD as well as CD's.

if you want to squeeze 6-9 cd's onto one dvd lets do some math 650MB for each cd * 6

that's almost 4GB and say that compression can cut it in half 2GB...that's a long download no matter what kinda connection you got....

and consider the load it would put on the debian mirrors and the lack of people who have dvd writers...(i will take a stab that most are mac users with new g4's who probably run os9/osx)

and another thing, for those wanting to upgrade from potato to woody with the dvd ISO image that is 2GB or larger...potato still has the 2GB file size limit...

mail the dvd's. postal service only takes a few days...

or maybe just make a way to combine all the cd iso's and write a quick script to DL them in order and combine them into one big file on your system to burn

Yes, but download the 6 cd images and it's not smaller. A script like the cd-image generation tool could be modified to make dvd images.

I think size is not a problem apart from the 2Gb file size limit under 2.2, but that could probably be resolved (combine 2 big files for the burn, or use a 2.4 kernel to generate the image).

I think the main problem is the lack of people with dvd burner and the relative youth of that technology : can a burned dvd be read on any standart dvd drive ? cdroms had major problems to adapt to that.

And DVD readers, honestly. Of the five computers I've been testing Woody on, one of them has a DVD-ROM drive. While I could put the other four on a network and use the DVD-capable fifth as a package source, in many situations it wouldn't be feasible. (Namely, two of the other four are at a different site and so are not conveniently networkable to the DVD source.) This sort of smacks of the whole "why do we only have packages compiled for 386?" controversy: the tension between innovation and backwards compatibility.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like a DVD available, too, but preferably through purchase. I can claim no expertise, I don't imagine that the overall benefit of a massively mirrored DVD image outweighs the burden of distribution, yet.

Compression does not work with debian iso's. I tried to compress the binary-1.iso and I the size is only 5% less. Normal because most of the data are debian packages (who are already compressed).

Oh how do you call a dvd iso ? I think the name iso is not correct because dvd has an udf filesystem

It's perfectly valid (and hardly irregular) to have an ISO filesystem on a DVD-ROM disc. All current DVDs use the "transition" format (i.e., dual-rooted UDF/ISO9660) anyway.

Do you think *EVERYONE* is going to be downloading that image? NO! Only people with dvd-r's are going to, and like others have said, downloading 6 cd's isnt going to be any less bandwidth intensive then 1 dvd.

As spock would say, your logic is flawed.

A DVD image wouldn't take up any less space or bandwidth than multiple CD images. So there's really not much point to them.
