GNU GCC 3.0 in Debian Sid/Unstable!
Contributed by ashridah on Sunday, April 08 @ 17:27:32 BST

    GNU / GPL
Recently, on the debian-gcc mailing list, Ben Collins, our esteemed DPL, made this post:

For the first time I was able to compile the gcc-3.0 CVS and build glibc 2.2.3pre1 with it on sparc-linux. Even more so, there were no errors from the glibc make check, and the library installed without any problems.
What I want to do is upload the current snapshot I have (since I know it to be working) into unstable. Hppa and ia64 require gcc-3.0, and I want to also get started on a libc6-64 for ultrasparc.

Apparently, he held true to his word, because along with the gcc-2.95 packages, there are also gcc-3.0 packages available for download in the debian unstable branch for sparc and i386. it's been suggested by both the kernel developers and the gcc developers that it's time GCC started getting more testing as it neared freezing, and what better way to try than to break many a kernel build with the new compiler, and send in bug reports by the truckload 🙂
