How does it compare to the debian packages?I've seen some impressive screenshots...Currently, I'm using the debian packages of

Gnome 1.4, and it works fairly well although there are some minor issues that are bugging me..

I'm wondering if I should try Ximian... Any thoughts /comments?

Has anyone actually used it on a Debian potato system?

If so how smooth, is it? If so specifically how.

I installed Mandrake 8.0 and Gnome 1.4 looks really real nice with Nautilus. Debian is definitely loosing ground to ease of use and ease of install to mandrake. My mom could install this bad boy.

On Potato, I did the install (non apt-get) of ximian. Nautilus' trees are screwed up, but after speaking with other users this a common problem.

Red Carpet seems to work well for users, except for some Debian folks. Apparently, there are incompatibilities between ximian and libc6 2.2 and 2.1 greater that cause a segfault. I'm experiencing this problem and was told to install redcarpet built for woody (http://red-carpet.ximian.com/ximian-gnome/debian-woody-i386/binary/red-carpet_1.0-ximian.12_i386.deb).

The ximian/redcarpet servers are flooded right now, so I'm not sure if this works.

If I want to keep ximian up-to-date, will I be ok using apt-get? (with source: deb http://red-carpet.ximian.com/debian stable main

) Or, should I use red carpet?

    Can I say two things:

    (1) If you use the Ximian packages, you're looking for instability. While they work hard to make good packages, the honest truth is, that they rarely pass Lintian checks, and often have naming, and numbering which conflicts with the 'standard' Debian way.

    (2) Please don't mail the Debian mailing lists when the packages break everything. There is a constant flux of people complaining about this and that, and upgrades not working etc. due to the fact that the packages are significantly different in name and content. For example sawfish-gnome, and sawfish exist in both Debian Gnome and Ximian Gnome, but the Ximian one WILL break your Debian Gnome, and there is little the official maintainers can do except tell you to nuke them all and re-install the official packages.

This isn't to say that the hard work of the people at Ximian isn't appreciated, it would just be nice if they'd involve the actual packagers (who had most of 1.4 in Debian within 2 days of release, FYI 🙂

After installing ximian 1.4, I'm unable to install galeon because it depends on xlibs (>= 4.0.1-11). This conflicts with libc6, right? Anyone experiencing this problem?

How does the latest Gnome compare to the latest KDE?

I recently ditched my old Ximian Gnome desktop for KDE2 and I gotta say I'm fairly impressed. It seems much more responsive, and Konquerer absolutely smokes compared to Mozilla or Netscape 4.

Any comments? I'd make this comparison myself if the Ximian servers weren't swamped right now...
