    XFree 4.03 in testing/woody
Contributed by asuzuki on Tuesday, May 15 @ 19:08:40 BST

    X Window
4.0.3 has been in Brandon's experimental area for some while. But now it's moved into testing - apt-cache says it's version 4.0.3-3.

You can read the release notes here and the driver status page here. (the xfree86 page seems to be down right now, however).

Netsnipe (16May01): As usual, Charl P. Botha has compiled the unofficial XFree86 4.0.3 debs for Potato...

Netsnipe: ...Read this from Botha for the sources.list line and this dP article for configuration tips. To install, apt-get update (after inserting deb lines) and upgrade everything, and then apt-get -f install xserver-xfree86 xserver-common. Note that some Potato users may also need some of Botha's libfreetype6_potato debs as well.

A wee bit off topic, but --

I did upgrade quite painlessly to 4.0.3 over the week-end when I did my weekly apg-get update / apt-get upgrade cycle, but I do remember also seeing *some* KDE 2.x packages being upgraded too.

I'm quite happy that XF86 4.0.3 is now part of Woody, and I'm happy to see KDE 2.x starting to seep (sp?) in Woody, but what about *a comlete* KDE 2.1.1 release for Woody? And since Woody will come out *after* KDE 2.2 (which promises a way better printing architecture, amongst other things), is there a chance we'll get KDE 2.2 in Woody?

Will XFree 4.X be incorporated into woody? Did I see something about XF 4.X not meeding woody release guidelines and therefore not being included until sid?

    Reverting to 3.x (Score: 1)
by Anonymous on Thursday, May 17 @ 04:51:39 BST

I've just upgraded my potato distribution to 4.0.3 and got the display comming up OK, but there are some problems:

My icons on the desktop (gmc) now have grey backgrounds, some windows have strange drawing problems around there edges (Gnome Terminal), and AbiWord no longer loads because it can't find the right fonts.

So is it possible to revert back to the old version of X that comes with potato? I can't figure out how to do it with dselect...
