    ReiserFS and GRUB
Contributed by ghbrewster on Monday, September 03 @ 09:04:08 BST

    File Systems
Hi, I've got a single / partition (no seperate /boot) which is ReiserFS, and I'm using GRUB. When I was using LILO, I had to mount it with "notail". Is this also true with GRUB, or am I safe without "notail" now? I would like to remove it if possible for better space efficiency.

Also, on the topic of ReiserFS mount options, if I have a ReiserFS 3.5 partition and then mount it with the "conv" option to convert it to 3.6 format, should I continue to mount it with the conv option later, or does it just need to be mounted once with "conv"?

DanielS: You don't need any special options for ReiserFS to work with GRUB; I'm using it now (since I haven't patched GRUB with the XFS patches yet). As for "conv", AFAIK you keep it on.

If you are running out of space using tails will get a little more out of your hard disk, but be aware that using tails will slow down file access somewhat.

I haven't tried GRUB but LILO _CAN_ work with
    reiserFS _without_ -notail option.

Extracted from lilo (21.7.5, debian unstable package) manpage:

"lilo is known to have problems with the reiserfs introduced with the 2.2.x kernels, unless the file system is mounted with the notail' option. This incompatibilty has been resolved with reiserfs 3.6.18 and lilo 21.6."
