    Upgrade successful
Submitted by robster on Saturday, December 09, 2000 – 14:33
We’ve just successfully upgraded to a new version of PHP-Nuke. So if you experianced any slight abnormailities they are now resolved. You will have to relogin as the cookies will need to be updated. The only things absent from the upgrade are the enhanced sidebars and the Debian Help sidebar is misbehaving. These are being resolved as we speak. Any bugs please mail us. Thanks.

    Rebuilding deb database
Submitted by SMO on Friday, December 08, 2000 – 19:16
I’ve been looking around for quite some time now and checked any available FAQ’s I could find…being new to debian
and an avid reader I figured I would ask. I came back to find my machine locked. No telnet/ssh, terminal access, nada so had to give it the old hard reboot. fsck’d the drives manually and went back on my way. Now I found that /var/lib/dpkg/available is missing….apparently the unlucky side effect of having to reboot the machine. Is there anyway to get this file recreated or am I SOL? Any info would be extremely greatful, this happened about an hour after one of our dept. Linux machines had two of the disks on its RAID array byte it. Thanks.

Eazel Nautilus PR2 is released into Woody
Submitted by Netsnipe on Thursday, December 07, 2000 – 15:09
I’ve just noticed today that Eazel’s Nautilus 0.5-2.1, otherwise known as PR2 has been recently released into the Woody stream, so it might be time to remove that Nautilus deb line from your sources.list file. Having used both Eazel’s and now the Debian release I can find no discernible difference between the both. If you’re upgrading to the Woody release though, a “rm -rf ~/.nautilus ~/Nautilus” might be in order to purge old settings and give Nautilus a speed boost.

    Commerical / Custom Distributions
Submitted by Anonymous on Wednesday, December 06, 2000 – 11:30
Can anyone recommend a commercial or custom distribution of Debian that includes KDE2 and Helixcode’s GNOME and is easy to install / configure?

Are Stormix or Libranet any good? Are they Debian?

Getty sucks! Why does Debian ship with it?
    Submitted by blah-Hipo on Tuesday, December 05, 2000 – 20:59
Whenever I fire up a fresh, luscious, sexy new install of debian gnu/linux, wanna know what the first two things I do are (after dialing into my internet provider)? apt-get install mingetty && vi /etc/inittab. Now, I am an idiot. I really have no idea what the differences are between them, I just take simple pleasures out of stuff like the screen being cleared when I logout, and being able to hit “ctrl-c” and try again right away when I fail to login properly. Why does debian use getty instead?
Possibly as its the industry standard?

    Late warning for late upgraders…
Submitted by ressu on Tuesday, December 05, 2000 – 18:36
Put PHP on hold, at least with PHP-Nuke, the new PHP 4.0 keeps crashing. So, if you haven’t upgraded yet.. and use software like php-nuke, backup your current php and then upgrade.. for now, it seems that DebianHelp.org has been hit by this problem!

Submitted by ressu on Tuesday, December 05, 2000 – 17:44
Seems that HP is growing ever more interested in Linux, now it has hired Bruce to Give the company a deeper view of Linux and open-source software. The same article gives a hint that HP plans to have it’s PA-Risc port of Linux ready before summer..
