The place to get help on a Debian problem (after reading docs) or to just chat and chill is #debian on irc.oftc.net.

Many of the Debian Planet staff live there so pop by and say hello.

Debian Planet also has its own channel on the same network called #debianplanet.

Finally, after much tinkering the annoying, recurring user.php bug has be squelched. Hopefully you should never experiance the problem again, however if you do please mail bugs@debianplanet.org. Also there seems to be some confusion about the forums, these are currently separate to the main site, so you will need to login with separate details separately.

    “Debian is a community” (TM)
Submitted by Netsnipe on Thursday, November 30, 2000 – 14:18
Hello everyone. Sorry about that rather long absent of mine from the front page of DebianPlanet, but I’ve been rather busy in the last few weeks; and forgive me if this seems like a rather hastily concocted article (it’s 1 am in Sydney!).

For those who see me regularly in #Debian, you’d notice one of my trademarks that I use to persuade expatriates from other distributions to convert to our little cause. Two things have recently popped up that would serve to make this even more true: the founding of the “hash-debian” website and a recent thread on the debian-devel mailing list highlighting the need for a ‘Debian jobs’ website.

    Debian-devel threads: dpkg-statoverride vs. suidmanager
Submitted by ressu on Thursday, November 30, 2000 – 09:19
today, an interesting threads appeared on debian-devel list, about moving from suidmanager to dpkg-statoverride. the main problem was, how it should be done and how to migrate the old suidmanager settings with the local additions to dpkg-statoverride database. there were
    nice suggestions
, but the one that appeared to be the winner is >–import-from-suidregister, which is already in >CVS tree.
This is interesting reading for everyone who used suidmanager in theyre packages.

World rolling with it’s own weight.

ok, there hasn’t been much to report lately, everything has been going on like normal, nothing out of the ordinary.
there has been a small demo of the new installer, which looked nice. I’m waiting to see it in action once it gets finished..
security fixes are the biggest changes lately, you better upgrade if you haven’t done it yet..

the rumours for 2.2r2 are getting stronger.. it will come, please be patient.

Submitted by robster on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 – 19:00
Woody has now reached more than 6000 packages, no wonder apt-get update takes so long :). Congrats to all those who have worked hard for Debian. This is an important milestone. Thanks goto xk for this scoop. Keep up the good work

    IRC Meeting over
Submitted by agl on Saturday, November 25, 2000 – 21:18
The DebianPlance IRC meeting has finished and was generally a sucess, except that the rep from DebianHelp didn’t show. The full log is below

    Main Points:
    * Ask DebianPlanet is to be retargetted to more general questions
    * DP will stress it’s news/comment stance rather than Q&A
    * DH should try to bring together the lists, FAQ-O-Matic and forum
    * People like Featured Articals, and DP will try to do more of them
    * The Debian WebTree is unweildly and probably impractical for a weblog
    * Make DP an official news source for Debian and closer integration where possible with debian.org
    * DP will try to get planet.debian.org
    * More interviews
    * Sidebars with information on package status and security alerts etc
    * Sourceforge project to host the changes to the PHPNuke core
    * The creation of Staff pages

Debian member of the GNOME foundation
Submitted by robster on Thursday, November 23, 2000 – 21:53
Debian is now a member of the GNOME foundation. Press release follows.

Personally I think it is great that Debian has a place on the foundation as one of the most popular 101% free distros with a growing number of users. It can help represent the views of the developers and the users from a DFSG point of view.
