GNOME 2.0.1 Desktop RC1: “Not Considered Harmful” released
    Submitted by robot101 on Friday, August 09, 2002 – 20:44
GNOMEThe first release candidate for the first point release of the GNOME 2 Desktop is now available on GNOME mirrors. Whilst it’s not in Debian yet, we like GNOME so we’re posting it straight away (read: robot101 is a hopeless gnome weenie 😉 –joy). The last I heard, the plan is to put GNOME 2 into unstable when 2.0.1 (final) is out. As with all 2.0.x releases, the focus is bug fixes, UI tweaks, translation and general polishing. See the announcement and list of closed bugs.

Maybe I misunderstood after reading the release info at the Gnome site…. but hasn’t Gnome2 been ‘officially released’ now?

People quickly mock a certain unnamed Redmond corporation when their software/OS releases are not up to par.

KDE3.0 worked a treat for me from day one. I presumed Gnome2 would also.

Who is Robster and why is he a monkey? 😉

The 2.0 monkier was to signal to developers that the API is frozen and they should no longer develop for 1.0. As it is users can use 2.0 with the 1.0 programs but most of the 2.0 ports are not stable yet. Apart from the usual bugs that come with .0 releases Gnome 2.0 is quite usable and the new point release should fix any major errors. 2.2 to be released I am hoping in the fall is supposed to be the users release with most of the important apps and themes ported.
