    Gnome 2 troubles solved
Submitted by Johannes on Sunday, November 24, 2002 – 12:53
GNOMEThe recent Gnome 2 breakage in sid has been solved. After a short debate in which several participants questioned the reasonability of including packages from the Gnome 2.1 development branch into Debian, Takuo KITAME uploaded fixed bonobo activation packages, which revert to upstream’s stable version 1.0.3, and carry an epoch to force upgrading from the broken 2.0 packages. A number of Gnome 2.1 packages still remain in Sid, a fact which does not amuse the Gnome Release Manager, Jeff Waugh.

    Subject: evil TTF font problems!

I’m pretty damn smug after finally figuring out what the problem was with TTF fonts not showing up in Gnome2. Basically, with XFT, you not only have to edit your XF86Config-4, but also XftConfig. After editing, I ran “defoma-reconfigure” and “xftcache” as root, just to cover all my bases. Following are the relevant sections:

    Section “Files”
    FontPath “/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/larabie-straight”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi”
    FontPath “/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi”

    dir “/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType”
    dir “/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1”
    dir “/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/larabie-straight”

apparently my XF86Config-4 and XftConfig were completely changed by some wicked update. it doesn’t matter… i’m back in gnome2 and i’m happy 😀

To ask a question is a moment’s shame; to remain ignorant is a lifelong shame
