Knoppix” is a complete GNU/Linux distribution based on the upcoming “woody” release of Debian GNU/Linux. Knoppix runs from a bootable CD and requires no installation on the target machine. Features include automagic hardware detection and a fully useable KDE installaton. Knoppix is not just a toy but useful rescue system.

what do you think of carrying your own system where ever you want? just put in your cd rom in any computer and you have your own desktop.

I hope you can modify it so you can really have youre own desktop.

i was thinking of something similar, boot from cd and having your system and all your files (writable) on a external firewire or usb2 harddisk. that would be really cool, to take it everywhere !

You really ought to try this amazing thing called “The Internet”! Often on “The Internet” you can upload files, and download them later. This actually means, that you can upload your desired config-files to “The Internet” and later, when you need them on another computer, you can download them again!!! I know it sounds crazy, but it’s actually true! This way don’t have to use those old, slooooow, and more and more often, unusable floppies. “The Internet”: The way of the future!

Well… It was fun to write 🙂

Or maybe some system to save your changes to /dev/fd0. Then the combination CD/fd would be your desktop.
