|The move to Drupal was not particularly easy. The primary problem was working on trying to convert the database from our old PHP-Nuke 4.0 (?) version to something suitable for Drupal. I wrote a script to do this, you can get this off me by dropping me an email.
The second big hurdle was the layout, I decided to basically do the whole thing from scratch again implementing it in cleaner html and using CSS. This had the side affect of making fonts not quite right for some users. Hopefully for the majority of users DP should look as it was originally. Pages should however load quicker as they contain less nested tags and repitition.
To provide our users with topic images i hacked the taxonomy code to support images and modified the theme accordingly, if anyone needs help with this also let me know.
The are still some outstanding problems, it seems that comments do not display in expanded view unless you are logged in. This is a problem that has me completely baffled but some of the Drupal folks are helping me out on it.
I get the impression Drupal was not designed for sites as large as ours as when you do a search it there is no limiting of the search to a particular number of articles. Comment moderation is another needed feature which is in the pipeline.
Lynx users may wish to try out the “clean” theme as this only has boxes on the right. However this theme must be considered beta quality only.
This morning’s server problems seem to stem from Drupal’s use of pconnects and poor optimisation of my MySQL configuration. These problems should now be resolved.
Thanks for sticking by with us =)
