    Ogg Vorbis 1.0 released!

MultimediaEarlier today xiph.org announced their release of the 1.0 version of the Vorbis audio codec. For those who have been paying absolutely no attention recently, MP3 is evil and patent-encumbered (explaining lack of encoders in Debian) so we’re all very happy to see Vorbis releasing. The codec is patent-free and BSD licensed (with RMS’s approval – for maximum dissemination) and the rest of the tools GPL’d.

The Debian maintainer, Chris Cheney (calc) prepared debs at the same time as the upstream release, but the libvorbis0 library is languishing in incoming awaiting the attention of the FTP masters (they may be busy with something else). Meanwhile you can get all the debs here.

Before you build, go into the source dir and edit debian/changelog, and increment the Debian revision (the bit after the last -) by 0.0.1. Then your package version will be greater than the version available on the mirror, so apt will not replace it, but will not be greater than any newer version of the package that appears.

    Hi,

    I think that:
    echo hold packagename |dpkg –set-selections
Is a nice, better, etc. solution:-)
