Indianapolis, March 16, 2001- Progeny Linux Systems announces that Release Candidate 1 of Progeny Debian is now available for download. Progeny Debian is based on woody, the current testing version of Debian, and made by a team of leading Debian developers.

“RC1 is the final form for Progeny Debian’s first edition,” explains Ian Murdock, president and CEO of Progeny Linux Systems and the founder of the Debian project. “We expect any changes after RC1 to be either bug-fixes or cosmetic improvements.”

    Features of RC1 include:

    • A graphical installer.
    • Graphical and command line tools for configuration.
    • A GNOME interface for debconf.
    • Packaged sets for easier package management.
    • Improved hardware detection and USB support.
    • Automatic detection of new hardware.
    • Optional migration to GRUB.
    • Automated multiple installations.

    Software included in RC1 includes:

    • Kernel 2.2.18 (2.4 optional)
    • XFree 86 4.0.2.
    • glibc 2.2.
    • Netscape 4.76 and Mozilla 0.7.
    • GNU parted
    • Open SSH.
    • GRUB 0.5.96.1

Progeny Debian First Edition is scheduled for the end of March. The boxed version of the product is planned for mid-April, and will include a hardcopy manual, free installation support, and a trial subscription to Progeny’s network services. Technical support and network services will also be available for separate purchase.

Just purchased this today, and am having problems.

Get to 2nd stage install, but when it tries to boot X I get monitor frequency problems.

I think its to do with the fact I have a Matrox G450 card which doesn’t work with the generic mga driver.

Looks like I’m back to official Debian, or perhaps try to install Progeny without X.

I’ll send an email to Progeny detailing the problem.

Okay, Progeny rc1 is nice & all, but why doesn’t it use the debian menus (from the “menu” package) by default?

Anyone who knows how to enable the debian menus in gnome would find that their help would be greatly appreciated.

I don’t use progeny, but in debian potato, using helix gnome :
right click on the pannel, choose add a menu, and there somewhere you can choose a debian menu.

boots, loads X, returns to console telling me CD is unmounted hit enter to reboot.

0 diagnostic messages, game over, try again.

    Thumbs down.

    Nice uncomplicated install on laptop.
Submitted couple bug reports during testing, although the response time (4weeks) was insanely long they did fix them.

Nice startup with 2.2.18 vs 2.4 boot.

Had to upgrade to KDE 2.1 from 2.0.

It’s Debian – had no problem installing packages through the debian mirrors.

Compared to WHAT? Are you proposing this happens to *everyone* who downloads the *beta*, or do you think maybe it’s slipping up on the .001% of the market you represent?

I’ve heard stories like this on ALL distributions – even released ones – so I have to call into question what you’re even running. Even if your current distribution installed fine… this IS a beta. Do you know what beta means??

I’ll bet $5 US you did not even file a bug report, or you expect this to be “it”. It’s lusers like you that need to stay on Windows. We can’t read into your cryptic sarcasm and deduce you’re running a EISA 486/66 with 32MB RAM and all ISA non-PNP hardware with no understanding of IRQ’s.

Consider how you could have posted in an intelligent manner…

on a serious note. I tried to install it last week. I spent 10hrs doing different install configurations and wound up with either the forementioned error or is crashing on configuring the monitor. I’ll submit a bug report as well.

I just really wish someone will come out will a distro comparable to storm. I’m still a newbie but I love how Storm Linux has treated me. I’ve installed it on serveral different machines and it works and is less buggy (to me at least) than Red Hat.

I just hope that Progeny can make this work with me tearing my hair out.

Well I’ve also tried Progeny ONCE without success. After trashing a Potato system completely, I reinstalled and haven’t looked back. Personally, I’m happier with X 3.3.6 than 4x. And I take offense at your reply. I think it’s elitists like you that keep Linux marginal. Didn’t your mother ever tell you that if you don’t have anything nice (or in this case constructive) to say that you shouldn’t say anything at all? Really, what exactly do you hope to acomplish by flaming people that have had problems with this distro?

No I didn’t file a bug report. It’s a commercial product, and not my responsibility. I find it PATHETIC that 0, zip, nada was printed in terms of a diagnostic message.

it would be nice if making a simple enough change like
deb http://… progeny main contrib non-free
    before my already present
deb http://… testing main contrib non-free
and doing apt-get -f dist-upgrade would allow something as simple as gnome-apt from the progeny installation to work even if dselect and apt-get seem to be ok

I’m very pleased to see that finally there is a comercially available distribution of linux based on Debian.
Personally i’ve choosed Debian many times over other distributions, let’s say that i like it’s motivation better than the others, but allways had a hard time implementing it on companies because they didn’t had other debian based distributions to turn to if they wanted nor the comecially available support that RedHat and others have.
With this release by Progeny i hoppe Debian get’s the support in the enterprises that they deserve, and hope that Progeny becomes a big company distributing and supporting Debian installations. That i’ll be possible if they don’t try to make Progeny Debian a proprietary distribution so that an enterprise running Progeny can easely move to Debian GNU or other Debian based distribution, but if their support is good and their distribution is standard there’ll be no reason to move.

We need a respected and well implemented standard on Linux or it will turn to be as proprietary and as vendor dependent as Microsoft products i hope Progeny understands that.

how about kde 2.1 instead of 2.0? (you can’t say you sticked with 2.0 for stability)

i also think it’s worth to wait for gnome 1.4, RC1 (1.4.0) is out and final will be released in a few days.

Progeny didn’t even load for me. From the install, ot messes up. It detects my cdrom its booting from as a scsi, then later when trying to load X during the install , t fails and eventually asks me to reboot , no changes made to system. Doesn’t even make it to the installer

For some weird reason, I didn’t hear anything from Libranet until some days ago. Noone seems to know it. I didn’t really care about Stormix too, until they went out of the game. Too bad…
I hope Progeny will be more successful with marketing. 😉

It depends on if any debian developer wants to maintain them. It should be a pretty trivial thing to do since they already are packaged.

So Progeny deb-packets will be 200% compatible with debian and vice-versa?

’cause this is not always the case with e.g. Mandrake RPMS on redhat…
