    Woody extra CD

WoodyNow that Woody is out, there are some interesting things that unluckily were not ready to get into it (X 4.2, GNOME2, KDE3, OpenOffice, a graphical installer…). Are there any plans to build an “extra” CD to complement woody for those who don’t care much about stability but have little bandwidth and desperate needs?

If you don’t care too much about stability, then wait a few weeks for sarge CDs. In his Woody retrospective and Sarge introspective email, aj (the current Release Manager) stated his aims of getting sarge stable as quickly as possible and keeping it that way. One of the aims was to have sarge CDs build regularly – these should be what you’re looking for.

I should have time to get these sorted out this week, although there is a good chance they will not be bootable to start off with, depending on the current state of debian-installer.

As for the update CDs, like the ones we did for last year’s Expo, they’re probably best done as an unofficial thing, because it’s a matter of taste what should be included. Personally, I use very little Gnome or KDE software, so my opinion on what to include would be largely worthless for most other people.

Also, the update CDs are a right pain to test, which explains why the last Expo one was only partially installable (it had broken Packages files on it IIRC) so marking them as “Official” would be a inappropriate, since it might encourage vendors to burn under-tested CDs.

If someone comes up with a decent selection on a CD, I’m sure we could put links to it, or even publish the jigdos in a contrib area on cdimage.d.o, so if you come up with something worth publishing, feel free to mention it to the debian-cd list.

    Cheers, Phil.
